Independent Age Assessment

A trauma informed approach....

We strongly believe in reducing the risk of re-traumatising young people during the age assessment process. Many young people would have travelled long distances and endured numerous challenges during their migration journey, and it is important not only to recognise trauma but limit any further harm.

How to take a trauma informed approach to age assessments

We actively take a a trauma informed approach which goes beyond acknowledging trauma and simply allowing breaks.  We gather information from young people by holding in mind the key principles of trauma informed practice which include safety,  trust, collaboration, empowerment and choice . At social work immigration matters we use a variety of direct work tools during the age assessment sessions which are based on life story work approaches.

What are the benefits of  using trauma informed approach in age assessments:

1. First and foremost it is better for the young people - we find that young people feedback positively about the experience of our age assessments .

2.Guidance (ADCS & BASW), state that social workers should be trauma informed.

3.A trauma informed approach is legally compliant and aligned to case law.

4. Our sessions are much more enjoyable than a typical question and answer approach and allow all of the professionals present to play their part.

Age Assessment Services Include :

  • Full legally compliant age assessment conducted by two qualified experienced social workers who are experts in assessments with separated  (asylum seeking) children .
  • A social worker who can conduct an assessment alongside a local authority social worker, demonstrating a trauma informed approach. This service can include an age assessment report.
  • A report conducted on a previous age assessment report completed by the NAAB or a Local Authority.
